TEMPLES and other

Chamnan and /or Vichet will help you arrange your day or days at the temples. For example: when, for how many days, were, and what time to see things! Best to avoid the crowds!!! It makes it special the sights, smells, sounds and gives you a personal side to their way of life ......Always listen to the locals…in this case!

(Phnom Kulen) not many visitors know about this place. It is in the hills, the Khmer empire carved the bottom of the river in the 9th century, with 3 waterfalls during the wet season.

What to bringwater, hand sanitizer liquid, umbrella for shade/rain, a hat and bug repellent.

- Copy of your Passport and Credit Card details, in a separate location.

Every Saturday evening at the Bopha Children’s Hospital, Dr Beat gives a free concert; he plays the Cello with a visual show!! www.beatocello.com

Take a trip to one of the killing fields in PP. There are over two hundred around Cambodia, it is a must. Alternatively visit a land mine museum …. Or a killing field monument in SR. To understand even a little of what the Khmer have seen and gone through, it is tough but gives your visit another perspective to their more recent history……….Khmer Rouge, land mines, disease…

If you would like to expand your Khmer experience (outside Siem Reap) We can now arrange a longer tour for you from Siem Reap, to Phnom Penh, to Sihanoukville, with side trips to (Kep and Kampot). We were very impressed with Sihanoukville and the south….VERY relaxing, great beaches, and comfortable accommodation, similar to the good old days of Asia. Chamnan will travel with you.

Transportation Vehicle: Van, Car, or even Motorcycle!!

Entry Visa: $ 20 USD per Adult- visas can be obtained by e visa, at a Royal Embassy of Cambodia, or on arrival at the airports. One passport sized photo required for each person.

Departure Tax: $ 25 USD per Adult

These taxes are sometimes now included with your airline ticket.

Currency Used: $ USD- one dollar notes are very useful and the Khmer Riel. US$1.00 = 4000 Riel

Cambodian riel (R) is the official tender in Cambodia but the US dollar is the de facto currency. Most hotels and many restaurants and shops set their prices in US dollars. Small transactions (less than a dollar) are usually done in riel. Always carry some riel for small purchases, motodup/ tuk tuk fare. Foreign currency can be exchanged at the banks or one of the many currency exchange shop. Several exchange shops, are located along Sivatha Blvd.
Credit cards and travelers checks are accepted at most upscale hotels, shops and restaurants, some mid-range place and a growing number of other businesses. The most commonly accepted credit card is Visa, MasterCard and JCB. AMEX are becoming more widely accepted. Most businesses charge a 2%-4% fee to accept credit cards.
AMEX in US dollars are the most widely accepted travelers checks. ‘Instant’ cash transfers can be done through MoneyGram or Western Union.
ATMs with international access are available across Cambodia. All ATMs dispense in US dollars. ANZ Royal Bank ATMs accept Maestro, Cirrus, Visa Plus, Visa and MasterCard. UCB Bank ATMs accept Visa Plus and Visa. SBC Bank ATMs accept Maestro, Visa and MasterCard. Canadia Bank ATMs accept Visa and MasterCard.
When you accept US dollars in change, inspect the bills carefully. Marked riel is acceptable tender, but the tiniest tear in a large US note, especially a $20, $50 or $100 note, renders it all but useless in Cambodia.

Banks, moneychangers and other businesses will not accept it.

On my visit in - Sept 07- a girlfriend had an ear problem, and we found a good Doctor for NON emergency conditions: DR. Rithy Kong- mention to the boys if you need to see him!!

Cultural does and don’ts

Khmer people are extremely tolerant and will forgive almost all of our cultural "faux pas". However a little awareness and consideration will help avoid causing offense, and ensure your stay in Cambodia is enjoyable.

  1. Smile and greet people. Everyone understands "Hello" and "Thank you".
  2. Both men and women should wear a shirt-to cover shoulders and knee length skirt / pants in village streets, temples, and restaurants.
  3. They are very affectionate with children. Feel free to fuss over little ones and let others fuss over yours.
  4. Don't touch strangers or children on their head.
  5. Public displays of physical affection are deemed immodest and inappropriate.
  6. Leave a small tip if you liked the service.
  7. Be soft spoken and deferential. This kind of humility is respected, and it is how most Khmer would behave in your country.
  8. Try to be patient with people's many personal questions. No harm is meant by their queries, learning is knowledge.
  9. Try to eat Khmer style foods. Don't be surprised if everything you order does not come out at the same time. Since Khmer usually share, they don't care much which dish comes out first.
  10. Do not point your foot at anyone or place it near them. This is extremely insulting.
  11. Displays of anger are likely to worsen a trying situation. So are declarations of "That's not the way we do things in my country!" Try to win the day with quiet and calm persistence.
  12. Avoid directly accusing someone if you feel you have been cheated. Contact Tourist Police .
  13. Remove your shoes before entering someone's home, or a temple.

Tricks of the temple kids

Phnom Pehn Post

kids_phnom penn

The cute kids selling stuff around the temples, asking where you come from, rattling out country facts like "England, capital London, Prime Minister Gordon Brown", and even attempts at Cockney rhyming slang can amuse. A Hungarian tourist said to a seller recently that if she could tell him the capital of Hungary, he would buy the book. The child confidently answered "Budapest", so a deal was done. Sometimes vendors rush up to people and interrupt their conversation with "You wanna buy flute, postcard, scarf, tablecloth". This irritating habit does them no favours, and I'd certainly not buy from them. Also beware of fake guidebooks. Tourists are sometimes offered shrink-wrapped guidebooks after being shown a pristine colour copy only to find that when they open the wrapping on the tour bus that they have a crude photocopy that falls apart within days. Of course, the children are not working in isolation, and they always have adults in the background. Their income supplements their family's income. These families are suffering badly with the lack of tourists, so if the kids are polite and say please and thank you, then do buy if you can. A little goes a long way here.

*Are you M.A.D? (making a difference)

How you can Help!

I have had many people ask me this question -I want to do more but I just don’t know how!!

Child Safe – a program in Siem Reap and Phnom Penh www.childsafe-cambodia.org

What is ChildSafe? ChildSafe is a child protection network - protecting children in Cambodia and other countries in the region- from all forms of abuse: sexual abuse, migration, drugs, domestic violence, etc...Many businesses support their work.

You can donate Blood - at the Bopha Children’s Hospital at Siem Reap, 10 minutes of your time.….

Water Filters – Please visit www.cooee-eco.com We must be M.A.D. category.

Water Wells If you wish to donate a water well which will support about 1-3 families, please see Chamnan

Programs

There are some private enterprises which run along social lines, meaning they do not run the business solely for profit, but ensure workers are able to work in a comfortable environment and are paid fairly for their work. This empowers people with a good income and working condition: Examples: Bloom, Nyemo, Smateria, Rajana, Friends-Tooit, and Tabitha.

Hotels

*some hotels now have programs to help local organizations.

Examples: Hotel d’ la Paix has a connect program, they can organize for you to visit Venerable Somnieng, the head of a local monk network who runs a sewing school and more. Shinta Mani trains and supports chefs.

Dine at Friends the Restaurant – run by street kids in training.
